Vehicle fires in underground parking garages are more common than generally assumed. Fires in airport parking garages pose a particular safety risk. The real danger comes from the highly toxic fumes.
Smoke extraction via a duct system.
The primary function of exhaust systems is to extract vehicle exhaust gases via exhaust ducts. Simultaneously, fresh air is supplied through ventilation ducts or inlet openings, such as the access ramps. The core of this system is a two-stage axial fan. In the event of a fire, the second axial fan activates for smoke extraction.
The combustion gases rise to the ceiling and are extracted via ductwork. Due to the low garage ceiling, smoke stratification is only possible for a short period.
Smoke-free environment thanks to a jet ventilation system (JVS).
Jet ventilation systems are an alternative to conventional smoke extraction systems. During ventilation, jet fans use a combination of jet and induction effects to ensure particularly good air mixing, the removal of CO gases, and thus fresh air in the underground parking garage. The calculated airflow rates for the garage are routed to the outside via fans in the central shafts; exhaust air and smoke extraction ducts are not required.
In the event of a fire, smoke rises to the garage ceiling due to thermal currents. There, it disperses. If smoke is detected, the fans integrated into the exhaust ducts of the JVS (presumably a specific system or system) are activated and extract smoke from near the ceiling. Initially, this creates a layer of almost no smoke. Escape and rescue routes are clearly visible , and people can escape independently.
The smoke extraction system activates the jet fans approximately three to five minutes after fire detection. By this time, the occupants have left the garage via the short escape routes . Activating the jet fans breaks up the smoke layer in the previously selected areas and clears any dead zones. The fire department can then locate and ultimately extinguish the fire largely unimpeded.
Because the Jet system also allows for the creation of large, well-ventilated fire compartments, open, spacious, and welcoming parking garages are produced . This improves orientation, well-being, and personal safety for users in all garage configurations.
