With the new VDMA standard sheet 24001, a binding technical basis for the planning, installation, testing, and operation of mechanical smoke extraction systems is now available for the first time. This closes a crucial gap in technical regulations – for greater safety, transparency, and efficiency in all project phases.
Until now, there has been no generally accepted technical standard that clearly describes the application of smoke extraction fans. In practice, this often led to inconsistent interpretations, project delays, and time-consuming coordination between planners, installers, manufacturers, and testing experts.
With VDMA 24001, all parties involved now have a uniform, manufacturer-independent basis – from planning to operation. The content thus ensures uniform standards, reduces planning uncertainties, and minimizes rework.
The standard sheet comprises 33 pages in nine chapters and offers:

VDMA 24001 refers to the new EU Ecodesign Regulations (EU) 2024/1834 and (EU) 1253/2014 .
This clarifies that dual-function fans – for ventilation and smoke extraction – must meet the requirements for energy efficiency and sustainability .
Thus, the new standard contributes not only to legally compliant planning , but also to sustainable building technology .
